Murdoch w/Scarlet Shades/Rubix Pube/Jackson Taylor/ hosted by Billy Penn News

Jun 1, 8:00pm

The Fire412 W Girard AvePhiladelphia, PA19123 Map

Join local newsroom Billy Penn at The Fire in Northern Liberties for a night of vibrations and libations with Murdoch in their first Philadelphia appearance supporting the album, “Gone.”Murdoch is the Philly/NY/NJ project born from Janet La Valley and Don Kimenker. From the energetic opener “Save The Day” to the quiet build of “My Love Lies There,” Murdoch’s latest album ‘Gone’ is an ode to the otherworldly. Combining elements of ethereal darkwave and classic rock, Murdoch creates a rich texture of layered guitar and haunting vocals. The band includes Lucinda Fisher (keys, EWI), Kevin McCarthy (bass), Steve Iannettoni (drums, backup vocals), Janet (vocals, guitars, keys), and Don (guitars.) Also featuring: Surf-goth Philly band The Scarlet Shades, who put the “fun” in funky-horror-chic. Try to stop yourself from bopping along to “How It Starts.” Self-described “mountain based mutant rock” Rubix Pube, hailing from Bethlehem, PA. Blues-rock enthusiasts Jackson Taylor Band, bringing their own youthful spin to the classics like Hendrix, Clapton, and BB King. The venue:Located alongside Engine 29 at 4th & Girard, The Fire is a recently renovated live-music venue and bar in Philly. Owner and operator Karen Lauria Saillant opened the stage back in 1999, envisioning an artist-friendly establishment where new talent could grow. Today, The Fire is a staple in the punk-rock Philly scene, hosting regular shows in addition to weekly open-mic Mondays. The host:Billy Penn is a local nonprofit newsroom that exists to inform and entertain the citizens of Philadelphia, the greatest city in the world. From breaking news to urban life to food and fun, Billy Penn covers everything Philly. Founded in 2014 as a startup, BP joined WHYY in 2019, the region’s NPR and PBS public media affiliate. "Unique, I can't compare it to anything, I love it" – Kenny Aronoff, drummer extraordinaire. "Janet with cool vocals… really haunting. – Eddie Trunk"MURDOCH is far from your 'run of the mill' band… get ready for a new mode of music that the business has been lacking for a long, long time. Mysterious, intriguing, uncanny, bizarre" – Jim Allford, Steel Notes Magazinewww.youtube.com/watch?v=GNVOzZ-G7HEmurdochband.comTickets $15 Adv $20 DOSSee MoreSee Less

Varona live in Philadelphia

Varona live in Philadelphia

Jun 19, 7:00pm

The Fire412 W Girard AvePhiladelphia, PA19123 Map

We're thrilled to announce that Varona is coming to the East Coast for the very first time and will be performing in Philadelphia at The Fire on June 19. More bands to be announced.varonaband.comFor all their tendency towards experimentation, Varona take a very meticulous approach to songwriting, arrangement and production. The result is a work of precise weirdness. W.H. Auden once suggested that poetry be defined as a clear expression of mixed feelings. By that standard, Varona's music is nothing if not potently poetic, filled to the brim with emotional ambiguity and contradiction. The band’s stylistic influences are no less mixed than the feelings their songs evoke. Barely-contained anxious spasms of screamy post-punk; frenetic, cheerfully-destructive experimentation of Downtown jazz; literary melancholic songwriting, are not so much ingredients here as deep-set roots, and the result is less a cocktail than an exquisitely strange hybrid mutant not quite like anything else springing from San Francisco’s fertile musical soil.See MoreSee Less
